We were a little apprehensive about today. Mostly because it was a 3hr train ride each way. That meant it was going to be a long day and what if it didn’t live up to the hype.
Everyone we talked to mentioned Tenby as a must visit, even our server at dinner last nite; “Oh, it’s totally worth the train trip” she said.
So, I fired up my buddy “DOC” aka ChatGPT, and we were armed with a recommended walking route through town with all of the ‘must see’ highlights we shouldn’t miss.
Up early to catch the 6:30 train, we were treated to some lovely Welsh countryside and arrived in Tenby to some wonderful weather with just a slight breeze to cut the heat.
The train station was undergoing a major overhaul and there wasn’t much of it left (not that it was very big to start with either!).
It was about a 10min walk down through town to the harbour and the beautiful coloured houses lining the cliff.
Our walking route was designed to take advantage of the outgoing tide and making sure we had the sun at our backs.
We walked out to Castle Hill and the North Beach, delighted with the views and all the flowers. From the hill we had a great view of town as well as St. Catherine’s Island.
The water was a little choppy and I think some of the smaller boats stayed in the harbour. I’m glad we skipped the boat tours, wouldn’t have been a smooth ride 🤢
From Castle Hill we walked down onto North beach and the views of town kept getting better.
By now, it was time to head back into town for a little lunch, and then we headed down to South beach as the tide was fully out and we could walk right out to St. Catherine’s.

We then headed back up the side of Castle Hill for some more views of St. Catherine’s before heading back into town.
As we left the beach, we stopped in St Julian’s church.
We meandered through a few of the shops on our way back to the train station. We definitely got our steps in today! On our ride back to Cardiff we both felt this was a highlight of our visit to Wales. We couldn’t have had a better day, and the town was like stepping into a postcard.
