Salamanca Train Ride

Originally we had a plan. We rebooked yesterday to get to Salamanca earlier. It meant an extra train ride. On the train from Bilbao we realized we were running late and if we stayed on Plan A we’d miss the middle train. We had 22 minutes to see if we could rebook and get a required seat reservation. WIFI is not high speed on trains. If we just stayed on our current train one more stop, we’d get to Segovia with a short layover, and only one more train trip.

It also meant we had to move seats because we overstayed our ticket. The conductor moved us to another seat. We shared (NOT) the table with the amigo across from me.

I gave up on my personal space many weeks ago

Hmmmm we’re realizing that now that we’re in Spain, the trains (and buses) are not always on time. We sure liked the timeliness of the Scandinavians. Alas, Plan B, C or D always work out.

The ride treated us with beautiful views of the Basque region of northern Spain.

Sun casting light on the mountains
We could see a valley between the ranges and we went right through the center
Then a treat of Sunflower fields of 🇪🇸

Now we’re waiting an extra 90 minutes for our new train (it’s late due to another train having a mechanical issue). It’s all about the journey and getting to the destination eventually. Patience panties are required.

This was our first station that required us to scan our bags. Rut roh we have some small knives but they weren’t concerned about those. We asked at security about the bag scan and tight checks for tickets and passports and she said “oh yes in Spain especially with their high speed trains, “it’s a very crazy (loco) world.” We couldn’t agree more.

Always good to see our ride arriving

So we’re on the train that required us to purchase a ticket and get a seat assignment or we wouldn’t have a valid ticket.

It is what it is

While waiting we received a message from our hotel to check in online. Armando confirmed check in and told us breakfast tomorrow morning will be in the casino. I translated to make sure it didn’t mean something else. Cool a casino, we love those…

Then I received this very disappointing answer…

Salamanca Suites are sweet. They’re cute lil studios. They even have a lil elevator (barely big enough for the two of us).

Each place we’ve stayed at has cool features, but always some quirks. We’re always happy to have an enclosed shower so we don’t flood the bathroom. It’s interesting that Europeans only have 1/2 doors on their glass shower walls.

Don’t leave the front door open if you’re in the shower
Bright windows
A tiny kitchen
Beautiful courtyard view

We went out for a walk and found yummy tapas, sangria and pasteis de nata for desert. Perfect for an evening in Salamanca Spain.

The Plaza Mayor is right around the corner. That’s City Hall.
Where we’ll rest our heads tonight
Fried artichoke with Spanish ham (left), and fried zucchini with ham (right)
Fried goat cheese with walnuts and honey!

It’s crazy. 6 Tapas, 2 Sangias, 2 water bottles and local olives for 27 Euros

A local bakery and desert

The long train rides & delays are just a memory as our tummies are full of excellent Spanish delights.
