Day-1a A Property Irregularity

It was a son-in-law start to our adventure — not what we were hoping for. Welcome to Iceland!

The first leg, Phoenix to Minneapolis, was a snap. We met up with Lori and Greg for the leg to Reykjavík where we had already checked in online. While waiting at the gate, I asked the ticket agent about the boarding process and she said she needed to check your bags to make sure they were not too large or over their weight limit for carry-ons. Ellen’s was just on the weight limit.

The gate agent said the flight was completely full, including the whole Iowa State marching band, so she recommended we check our carry-on. The agent said “it’ll be easy for us to check your bag, then you don’t have to worry about it.”

Queue the suspenseful music; trouble is just around the corner…

The boarding process seemed to go off without a hitch, but after closing the door, we didn’t back away from the gate. Well, after a half hour delay, we got the announcement, the one that turns your stomach “we have to take 20 bags off because we’re too heavy to take off.”  Can anyone say ‘band equipment’! Surely they don’t mean our bags, we’re in first class.

As we start down the runway Ellen sneaks a peek at her phone to see the location of the AirTag she put in her bag, and it shows the bag icon still at the gate in Terminal 2. Mine shows the same. Waaaaaa. We’re not even off the ground yet and we’re already talking ‘Plan B’!

Upon arrival, I got a nice surprise when my carry-on popped out onto the turnstile along with Lori and Greg’s! But sure enough, no bag for Ellen. Her AirTag shows her bag is thousands of miles away. It is what it is, so activate Plan B!

We head to the service counter in baggage claim where Ellen has to fill out a “property irregularity report” and is promised she will get it tomorrow when the next flight arrives. Any bets? 🙂
