Day-5 More From Mývatn Lake

We didn’t go far today. A short ride out to the lava fields at Dimmuborgir, known as the “Dark crags” to start the day. Originally formed from a lava-lake, the area is now crisscrossed with different walking trails offering many interesting caves, arches and formations.

We then circled around the largest crater and hiked to the top. The view was spectacular.

Hverfjall Volcano

Hverfjall is a tephra cone or tuff ring volcano that erupted about 2,500 years ago and is about 1 kilometer in diameter. Even today, very little grows on it.

Spectacular Views From The Rim

Also nearby is Námafjall sulphur hot springs. Interesting to look at, but be careful, that water is almost 400 degrees Fahrenheit!

STINKY!

We had an early dinner at a lovely farm to table restaurant. They had lots of animals running around, and you could even pet the cows in the attached barn.

Great Farm-to-Table

We finished the day off at the Nature Baths at Lake Mývatn.

Mývatn Nature Baths

The water is alkaline and contains a large amount of minerals, which makes the use of chlorine or other disinfectants unnecessary.

After a very relaxing 2 hour soak, it was back to the B&B for the night.
