Day-3 NW Iceland

Our first stop was a small town called Hvammstangi on the Vatnsnes Peninsula hoping to see some seals and puffins along the way. We were told the seals were farther north but, it was all gravel road up and around the peninsula. It was a bit jarring for sure, but at least there was almost no traffic🙂

We stopped at Fjara where we spotted some seals basking along the opposite beach.

Up the beach a ways from the seals was this interesting rock formation.

This area is also known for its horse breeding, and shortly after leaving the beach we spotted these guys right alongside the road.

Next stop was Kolugljúfur canyon, where the waters flow peacefully only to suddenly plunge into the gorge, forming the impressive Kolufossar Falls.

Back onto paved roads (Yea), we headed off to see the church in Víðimýri.

And then on to Glaumbær, a farm, church and parsonage where we explored a little of the old traditional sod houses.

We then headed for our overnite stop near the town of Akureyri where we had a nice dinner and walked through town a bit before calling it a day.
