Brugge History & Relic Surprises

We spent the morning booking train travel for the rest of our stay in Europe, while trying to avoid big cities if possible. We think we’re done, but changes may happen. It’ll be JEllens adventures for sure. At the end of July a week in Lagos and 9 days in Madeira will put the finishing touches on this part of our journey. Then to Ireland, our happy place 🇮🇪

We love our Airbnb, it has lots of great space to chill. The back patio door is open & the breeze is perfect. Jeff has a snuggly blanket for late afternoon 💤 after we walked our lil feet off seeing the sights.

The flowers, canals and parks are welcoming. Always watch for bikes and mopeds, the locals are NOT slowing for you, they’re heading somewhere.
Archways everywhere – it’s a Medieval city
The smallest bridge is for ❤️

The churches are massive
The detail & murals incredible

The sun is peeking out and the sky is turning a magnificent blue; OUTSIDE is calling.

The horsies are much happier today
BEST fries ever!

We found Mr Potato for a cafe lunch, including Belgium Fries (perfect) with a dip with a lil bite 🌶️

Tried Cuberdons, they looked so colorful and fun. A Belgium confection made with sugar (I know) and fruit flavors and baked for one week until they are perfectly hard on the outside & runny gooey bursting with flavor on the inside. We had one orange & one anise and they were scrumptious. But we’re sticking to chocolates; dark for me, milk for Jeff.

We’ve wanted to go on a canal tour, for a very different perspective. It’s sunny & not too crowded.

A must visit to the Basilica of the Holy Blood, you heard right 🩸

In 1147 the Count of Flanders ‘took the cross’ and joined the Second Crusade. In 1150, it was reported that he returned to the city with a relic of St Basil, a phial that is said to hold a scrap of cloth with the blood of Jesus Christ.

As you enter, signs requested complete silence & respect as you enter another part of the church and behind the altar, which has alabaster figures depicting the Last Supper, is a mural of the Trinity and scenes relating to the Holy Blood and Passion of Jesus. The relic is kept in a small glass cylinder and stored in a spectacular silver tabernacle. You are allowed to climb the stairs to see it, and stop for a prayer. There is a member of the church there but never looking up. It is a most sacred place.

Not even sure where to go from here. But like any good local we decide it was best to have our “terraseka doen” and people watch on the patio at the Half Moon Brewery.

Tried a local dark
Looks like the Silver Surfer
Definitely & a favorite comic from Jeff’s childhood

A nice walk home with a few photos to share. This is a magical place. We have tried to cover and capture its medieval, yet pristine cityscape.

Charming mail box
Remember these? A little fancier way to clean the horse manure before going inside your home
Just can’t pass up bicycle cuteness
It was so windy all day and finally I snapped the Brugge flags

A day like no other, the blood of Chris. Still trying to wrap my head around that, and it will definitely take awhile.

Lots of rain in the forecast tomorrow so we decided to hop on a local train to Ghent for the day as we wind down Belgium.
